Founder of Coaching, Thomas J. Leonard

February 2004

I am pleased to send to you this month's issue of Champions. On February 11, 2003, the Coaching community lost, who some regard as the Founder of Coaching, Thomas J. Leonard. I had the opportunity to meet Thomas personally and can attest to his genius, vision, creativity and boundless energy. Anyone who met Thomas Leonard was profoundly impacted by him.

I would like to honor Thomas this year by periodically dedicating a Champions issue to him. In his book, The Portable Coach, he describes in detail a 28-step program that provides readers with a blueprint for success, happiness, and fulfillment.

A good place to start is at Step 1; Become Incredibly Selfish. Leonard feels that creativity and excellence require selfishness. He says that you need to answer the callings of your heart and mind before you answer to the callings of others.

He goes on to say that, "When you become truly selfish, you'll have the extra reserves needed to really care about and be generous with others." By being a role model on a solid foundation, you can help others without risking being personally "taken down" in the process.

Thomas suggests spending the next seven days doing something very, very selfish each day. Consider making a list of 7 things you really want but haven't been able to let yourself have. He suggests that if done responsibly, you'll develop warm and positive feelings about how good you can be to yourself and therefore have more to give to others.

I'll conclude by listing the 10 areas that Thomas suggests we each should consider focusing on. They are:

  • Stress elimination
  • Environment and family
  • Pleasure
  • Well-being
  • Support and Experts
  • Ingestion
  • Appearance
  • Sustainability
  • Daily routines
  • Special-care items

I hope you enjoyed this brief glimpse into Thomas Leonard's' 28-step Principles of Attraction program. To see more of what Thomas has created, check out the Coachville website. click here
