Peak Performers
March 2004
I am pleased to send to you this month's issue of
Champions, Peak Performers. Charles A. Garfield
is the author of Peak Performance, and is the chairman
of Performance Sciences Inc. in Palo Alto, California. He
has identified nine characteristics that peak performers
have in common. I hope that you enjoy reading Peak
Performers.
Peak Performers
-
Peak performers derive their motivation from a very
personal and passionate commitment. They more often
than not, experience their work as replenishing and
nourishing as compared to debilitating and toxic, as do
workaholics.
-
Peak performers understand the need for systematic
relaxation and reflection. Both the mind and the body
need time to recharge and regenerate. By taking time
to relax and reflect, you can keep both life and work
challenges in perspective, as well as, nurturing the
ability to become more creative and efficient in solving
problems.
-
Peak performers are frequently deeply committed to
some physical activity. Everyday there is more
evidence, which points to the mind-body connection.
-
Peak performers develop and nurture strong family and
friendship networks.
-
Peak performers practice mental rehearsal. By mentally
rehearsing desired outcomes, the odds of reaching
those outcomes increases. This can be seen by
watching athletes prepare for an event. It is as true in
business, as in sports.
-
Peak performers challenge popular notions and their
own limiting beliefs. It is the difference between
a "what now!" vs. a "what if" attitude. They also are
not afraid to make mistakes. Sometimes learning from
failure provides greater insight than learning from
success.
- Peak performers develop the core competencies
necessary for excellence and success in their field.
They realize that the more they know, the more they
need to know.
- Peak performers have a sense of the use of time.
They divide all of their activities into categories, and
try to do those activities that can best be
accomplished only by themselves. The other activities
can either be rejected or delegated.
- Peak performers know how to commit. As Albert E.
N. Grey said in a speech entitled, "The Common
Denominator of Success", "successful people form the
habit of doing the things that the unsuccessful people
don't do". Once you are committed to your goals or to
an activity, your achievement drive is released. It is
this drive which enables you to overcome whatever
obstacle may be in your path, so that you can achieve
your goals and dreams.
