A 7-Step Strategy To Achieve Your Dreams
March 2003
Obstacles are inevitable on the road to success. People who tackle
those obstacles and take action have a greater chance of overcoming
them, but those who make excuses for allowing them to get in the
way of success will have a tough time. Here’s a 7-Step strategy
that will help you to achieve what’s important to you.
1) Write down the challenge or barrier you want to eliminate.
Before you can overcome an obstacle, you must be able to recognize
it.
2) Define what is keeping you from getting around to it. Ask yourself
why you have not yet been able to overcome the obstacle. Put your
reasons on paper. An honest analysis of your challenges will help
ensure more effective strategies for overcoming them.
3) Analyze what’s on the other side of the “but”.
Excuses are what you find on the other side of “but”,
as in “I want to be more organized, but…” These
excuses are self-limiting beliefs that we convince ourselves are
true. Facts, on the other hand, are always true, where beliefs
may or may not be true.
4) Ask yourself what you stand to lose. Excuses are costly. Refusing
to make excuses helps you enjoy more successes.
5) Think about similar problems you have had in the past. By identifying
ways in which this challenge differs form previous ones, you can
adjust your strategy to maximize its effectiveness.
6) Consider what you stand to gain. A challenge worth meeting
has its rewards. When you don’t make excuses for failure
you have the satisfaction of knowing you did all you could and
never gave up on your goal.
7) Take the first step. Now that you have decided on the challenge
you face, how you will tackle it and what you stand to lose and
gain, get going! Make a list of three action steps that will help
you build the momentum you will need to leap over your barrier.
The people who are most deserving of success and most likely to
achieve it are those who keep going even when they seem to have
excuses to quit.

Good luck to you on your journey to success.
