Being the Best

November 2005

Frequent readers of Champions’ E-Zine know that in order to continue to grow as individuals and to achieve whatever it is we desire to achieve, we must adopt the philosophy of life-long learning. While it is easy to say, “Of course this is so,” it may be harder than you think to carry out and make a part of your life and who you are! Life-long learning not only applies to intellectual knowledge, but also applies to learning from our experiences. This includes our personal interactions with others, their impact on us and our impact on them. As we strive to be the best we can be; there are a number of factors that will greatly influence who we are and what we can achieve. These factors are:

Personal Development-Are you committed to learning? This includes developing both your business and personal sides. It may include learning a new skill, volunteering in the community or for a cause, taking up a new hobby, going to a lecture, visiting a museum or reading a book.

Attitude-Life is about choice and so is how we react to what it throws at us. We have 100 percent control of our attitude. Our attitude also has impact upon those around us. When given the choice between having a positive or negative attitude, choose to be positive. We’ve all heard the cliché’s about turning obstacles into stepping stones and that every setback is an opportunity for growth; we know it’s true, but it takes some will power and commitment to apply this principle to ourselves. It is well worth the effort. I’m sure we all know people who exude enthusiasm and have a positive attitude. Is their life perfect? No. They have their share of problems and challenges, yet they choose to approach life in a positive way. They are fun to be around and often inspire others to be their best.

Persistency-Winston Churchill said it best, “Never, never, never, give up.” Don’t listen to people who say it can’t be done, especially if they never accomplished what you are attempting to do, be, or become. Surround yourself with people who are on your team. Being persistent allows for fine tuning adjustments. Keep a clear focus on the end goal, but don’t be so tied to the exact outcome that you become inflexible.

Relationships-Our world continues to be more and more complex. It’s impossible to know everything about everything. Developing positive relationships will not only help you to achieve your personal and/or business goals, but also will satisfy one of our most basic needs; the need to connect with others, to be understood and appreciated for who we are. Show genuine interest in everyone you meet. They have similar needs to your own.

Teamwork-It’s as basic as helping everyone to win. It sounds so simple, yet it requires taking the time and making the commitment to do so. Being a part of a great team is a wonderful experience. Your efforts will be handsomely rewarded and will come back to you many fold.

Follow-up-Make good on your promises. Respond quickly and decisively. Whenever possible, under promise and over deliver.

Vision-Sharpen your focus on what you want to have, achieve, or become. The more clarity you have, the greater the chances for achieving it.

Emotions-Interpret reality objectively. Sometimes it is necessary to detach yourself from the situation. Try to never put negative labels on events. To get a better handle on your emotions and their impact on yourself and others, check out the topic of emotional intelligence at your library or bookstore.

Integrity-Be authentic. Always tell the truth and admit your mistakes without delay. People need to know where you stand and should be able to predict how you will react to any given situation.

Expectations-Don’t settle for less than you know you can accomplish. Strive to do better every day. Some days you’ll do better than others, and that’s ok. High expectations act as a magnet and will pull you to greater and greater levels of success and achievement.

I hope you enjoyed reading Being the Best. Good luck on your journey to success.
